For the Martha’s Vineyard Book Festival next Sunday organizers made a point of seeking authors who might appeal to younger residents. Lazarus is pleased to have lured Melissa Coleman, who wrote a memoir about growing up in the 1970s when her parents were caught up in the back-to-the-land movement, and novelist Chris Adrian, named by The New Yorker one of 20 writers under age 40 to watch.

Martha's Vineyard has long been known as a Mecca for writers. Our historical record is rich with the names of some of the literary greats. And the Island continues to attract — and foster — writers of every ilk.
Every other summer since 2005, the Martha's Vineyard Book Festival at the Chilmark Community Center has brought numerous authors together for a full day of talks and books signings. This year's event on August 7 will feature about 25 authors (not all of whom are scheduled at this time), such as Alexandra Styron, Geraldine Brooks, Linda Fairstein, Ward Just, cookbook authors Joan Nathan and Jessica Harris, and Charles Rappleye discussing his book "Robert Morris: Financier of the American Revolution."
Festival founder and organizer Suellen Lazarus notes that this summer they will introduce more books with appeal to younger audiences. She is excited this year to be hosting Chris Adrian, who was included in the New Yorker's 20-under-40 fiction issue.

It seems timely to provide an update on the Martha's Vineyard Book Festival which is coming to Chilmark, as it does every other year, on Sunday, August 7. The festival runs from 11 am to 5 pm and features 25 authors in tents speaking during the course of the day. Authors include both local favorites and others from off-Island. Among the authors that will be speaking are Siddhartha Mukherjee, Amor Towles, Alexandra Styron, Edith Pearlman, Kostya Kennedy, Geraldine Brooks, and Isabel Wilkerson. According to Suellen Lazarus, "It is a stellar line-up and we are very proud to welcome this distinguished group to Chilmark." Sadly, Ted Danson had to drop out of the book festival due to a scheduling conflict with his work. The event is free, books are available for sale through Edgartown Books, and authors will sign their books following their discussions.
